Ontario County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jack Marren lectured Casella Waste Services officials Monday, telling them to be “forthright and honest” in dealing with the Planning & Environmental Quality Committee about the county landfill.
Marren’s admonition came as landfill manager Rob Fadden gave the Casella operations report on the 389-acre county landfill in the town of Seneca to the committee Monday.
“It has been a pretty good month, with little odor issues to speak of,” Fadden said.
He was immediately countered by committee member Mark Venuti, D-Geneva, who said the DEC inspection report showed some violations.
“That was miscommunication between me and the DEC,” Fadden replied.
But Venuti persisted, saying there were odor violations on Feb. 25 and 26 and another in early March, involving odors, overflow of leachate ponds and litter.
“In Geneva I have smelled the landfill several times in the past month. I know what it smells like from driving by it, and I can smell that in Geneva,” Venuti said.
