Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro on Thursday passed a key milestone needed to lock up the Republican nomination for governor after winning the latest in a series of endorsements from state GOP committee members.
The Manhattan Republican Party said it voted overwhelmingly to support Molinaro in his bid for the nomination to take on Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo in November.
The endorsement means that Molinaro now has 50.01 percent of the weighted vote of Republican State Committee members heading into the party’s May nominating convention, according to Molinaro’s campaign.
Any candidate who receives more than 50 percent of the GOP vote at the convention automatically becomes the party’s nominee on the November ballot.
Molinaro’s chief rival, state Sen. John DeFrancisco, R-DeWitt, has endorsements representing almost 20 percent of the weighted vote. A third candidate, Joseph Holland, has not announced any endorsements from committee members.
