A Cayuga County career organization is helping a mass of workers recently laid off from Cayuga Centers last month.
Ann Kubarek, director of the Cayuga Works Career Center, said her Auburn office has been busy assisting nearly 120 people find jobs after the family services organization announced the closure of its residential program Feb. 22. The closure also affects some Auburn Enlarged City School District employees, who were employed at a school for the center's clients.
Kubarek said Cayuga Centers offered those residential program employees an "early out," which included four weeks pay if they left by March 1. Due to state law, Kubarek said when an agency has 50 or more employees and conducts a mass layoff, it's required to give employees 90 days notice. Those that did not take the pay out can remain on staff until May 23.
