DYNASTY: Heather Mott’s South Seneca Lady Falcons win third consecutive Sectional Championship (full game video)

After the South Seneca girls varsity basketball team graduated 4 starting seniors from a group that captured a NYSPHSAA Championship and a went to the NYS Final Four in consecutive years, many assumed that South Seneca would spend a year or two to rebuild their program back to championship status. Those people were wrong.

South Seneca’s girls basketball program isn’t skipping a beat after Saturday’s 55-36 win over Red Jacket to capture the 2018 Section V Class C2 Championship at Rush-Henrietta High School. It was the South Seneca’s third straight Sectional title.

The Lady Falcons opened up a 13-8 lead after the first quarter then extended the margin to 30-13 at halftime. They would cruise through the second half to a 19 point win over their fellow Finger Lakes West league-mates Red Jacket.

South Seneca junior center Jade Parsons led all scorers with 18 points to go with 13 rebounds. Jenna McDonald, named the tournament MVP, scored 16 points, dished out 6 assists and had 5 steals. Emma Fletcher scored 14 points, recorded 6 4 assists and grabbed 5 rebounds while senior Skylar Shaulis scored 7 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Skylar’s sister, freshman Logan Shaulis, handed-out 6 assists and snagged 10 rebounds.

For Red Jacket, who will return the bulk of their roster next season, Sara VanAken scored 12, Sydney Close had 7 and Olivia Spencer finished with 6 points in the loss. The Indians season ends with an 18-6 record.

South Seneca improves their season mark to 20-4 and will next face the Class C1 Champs, Notre Dame-Batavia in the Class C State Play-In game next week for a chance to advance to the NYSPHSAA Far West Regional which would put them one step away from a third straight trip to the NYS Class C Final Four.
