Cayuga County thinks the Federal Emergency Management Agency was wrong to dismiss a disaster declaration for the southern end of the county, and is calling on state representatives to fix it.
Heavy rains pummeled the Moravia area with two storms between July 1 through 14, causing nearly $4 million in damage. Despite meeting its threshold for federal aid, in December FEMA denied the county and 14 others a disaster declaration. Earlier this month it denied the state’s appeal.
Legislator Keith Batman, who represents constituents in District 7, said new information had come to light as to why FEMA denied the aid. FEMA claimed, Batman said, that it could not approve a disaster based upon two separate storm events.
