Sheriff: Inmate damaged jail property, presented forged docs to obtain contraband

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of a 24-year-old Corning man following an incident at the County Jail.

According to deputies, Forrest C. Smith, 24, of Corning possessed a forged document and presented it to jail personnel in an attempt to gain contraband.

Smith was subsequently charged with second-degree forgery and second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

Deputies say both charges are felonies, but they aren’t the only ones Smith faces.

He was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal mischief — a Class E felony after allegedly intentionally damaging property, which was valued at more than $250.

It is alleged that Smith broke a cell window at the Steuben County Jail, as well.

He was arraigned in Bath Town Court and remanded back to the Steuben County Jail.
