Poll: John DeFrancisco unknown by NY voters as he launches bid for governor

State Sen. John DeFrancisco may be the leading contender for the Republican nomination for governor, but a new poll published today shows he's still largely unknown outside of Central New York.

When New York voters were asked last week about their opinion of DeFrancisco, 81 percent said they didn't know enough about him to answer the question, according to a statewide poll by the Siena College Research Institute.

Among those who had heard of DeFrancisco, the state Senate deputy majority leader, 10 percent had a favorable opinion and 9 percent had an unfavorable opinion, the poll found.

DeFrancisco, R-DeWitt, emerged over the weekend as the frontrunner in the GOP race for governor after his chief rival, Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb, abruptly dropped out of the race.
