More than 1,300 members of the Finger Lakes Area School Health Plan, a local healthcare consortium made up of 35 school districts and Finger Lakes Community College, are diving into the new year by embracing a dietary challenge.
The 10-day Plant-Based Jumpstart Your Health Challenge begins Monday and continues through Jan. 17.
Multiple studies have shown that whole foods plant-based diets heal many chronic diseases ranked among the nation’s leading causes of death. The Victor school district teacher leading the initiative, Doug Schmidt, suffered a heart attack at age 49 and healed himself through a whole foods plant-based diet.
A select group of FLASHP participants had blood drawn before the challenge started, and those same people will be tested again upon its conclusion. Drops in total cholesterol average 26 points, and blood sugar, blood pressure and weight usually go down too.
