Ithaca Police Chief Pete Tyler talks about department’s future

After 27 years with the Ithaca Police Department, Pete Tyler made city history last month when he became the city’s first chief of police of color.

Tyler had been acting chief since March, following former Chief John Barber’s retirement. After a nationwide search for Barber’s replacement, Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick said at Tyler’s December swearing-in ceremony that his suspicions were right all along: Tyler was the man for the job.

Tyler, who previously served as Ithaca’s administrative deputy chief and senior deputy chief, and has been on Ithaca’s SWAT and Recruitment teams, said during the ceremony, “I take this challenge seriously.”
