Tompkins County Legislature committee discusses safe injection facilities

In February 2016, Ithaca released its 25-part plan of action to loosen the grip that the nationwide opioid epidemic holds on the city.

Of the 25 propositions made in the plan, the one that has objectively received the most media attention and public scrutiny is to open a Safe Injection Facility (SIF) in the city, providing heroin users a refuge where they can inject heroin under medical supervision and with clean supplies.

Nearly two years after Ithaca published its plan, members of the Tompkins County Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee were joined by local experts and leaders in the opioid epidemic Monday to discuss the logistics of establishing such a facility.

Committee Chair and District 2 Legislator Anna Kelles said the purpose of the meeting was not to determine if and when a SIF be established, but to “get information from both directions.”
