U.S. Rep. John Katko will join most Republicans in supporting the final $1.5 trillion tax plan when it is considered by the House Tuesday.
A spokesperson for Katko, R-Camillus, confirmed he will vote for the bill. The congressman touted “significant wins” for central New York in the tax plan.
He highlighted the elimination of a provision that would have considered tuition waivers for graduate students as taxable income. An earlier version of the tax bill that Katko supported included the change, but it was removed when House and Senate leaders negotiated the final agreement released Friday.
Katko signed a letter urging congressional leaders to remove the provision. He said it would harm the region’s economy, which benefits from the presence of Syracuse University and other higher education institutions.
