The Seneca County Health Department is warning customers who have municipal water service in the Town of Varick to boil water.
They say Varick Water District #4 is the only one under the advisory, which will remain active until further notice.
On Tuesday the water system lost pressure due to a water main break. Seneca County Health says that when distribution pipes lose pressure it increases the chances of untreated water and harmful microbes of entering the system.
They say to not drink the water without boiling it. “Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water certified for sale by the New York State Department of Health,” the department said in a statement. “Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.”
According to officials, the main is currently under repair. They gave no additional details on the location of the break, but noted that residents would be advised when the issue was resolved.
