Second only to Christmas, Thanksgiving holds the hearts of Americans as a top pick in holidays according to a 2015 Harris Poll. But this season of family, feasting and football also brings with it added hazards for drivers. With shorter days and deer on the move, a time of celebration can quickly turn tragic; and for those of us who have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, we fully understand the need for caution. Here are some safe holiday driving tips that Seneca Meadows provides to our staff.
- Turn headlights on at the onset of twilight
- Keep windows, headlights and mirrors clean
- Watch for intoxicated/distracted drivers
- For nighttime driving
- Don’t look directly at oncoming headlights as vehicles near, but focus on a point on the right side of your lane or the shoulder of the road
- Drive within the range of your headlights, and allow more following and stopping distance
- Watch for the glow of animal eyes
- Dim your headlights when you are between 600 and 1,000 feet of another vehicle
