NWS: Possibly record-breaking cold, ‘flash freeze’ possible tonight

FLX Weather Meteorologist Drew Montreuil says it could feel like temperatures are in the teens, or even single-digits on Friday after a cold front passes through.

High temperatures on Friday are only expected to top out in the mid-20s, and strong, gusty winds out of the northwest will make it feel significantly colder.

How cold is cold, though?

Well, historically speaking — some places could reach record low temperatures during the early-morning hours on Saturday, after that ice cold experience on Friday.

If temperatures get below 19 degrees, some folks in Central New York will be experiencing the coldest of November weather experienced in decades, according to the National Weather Service.

The other concern, as temperatures drop swiftly Thursday night — is what meteorologists call a ‘flash freeze’. Showers are in the forecast as the front passes, and when the temperatures fall — and fall quickly they will — black ice will be possible.

The National Weather Service added, “A flash freeze is possible Thursday evening and overnight, meaning wet road surfaces may quickly turn to black ice, resulting in dangerous travel conditions. Bridges, overpasses, and any elevated surfaces are especially susceptible to flash freezing. Snow squalls are also possible Thursday night, which may result in minimal snow accumulations, but produce localized poor visibility and slick roads, resulting in dangerous travel conditions.”

A Lakeshore Flood Warning has been issued for Monroe, Wayne, and Northern Cayuga counties in the Finger Lakes region, which will see the increased risk of flooding, as winds shift to the northwest.

Those same counties are also in a Wind Advisory, as those winds turn up out of the northwest. That runs from 6 pm on Thursday until 6 am on Friday.
