Every Wednesday morning, Ruth Bradley stops by the King Ferry Corner Store on Route 34B. A native of Cayuga County, she sits among a small group of men and women, sipping her coffee and catching up with old friends. And inevitably, she'll reminisce about her family's history in the hamlet.
Born in Auburn, Bradley was raised in King Ferry, where her parents bought a home in the 1930s. She said she was always in tune with her genealogy while growing up, attending large family reunions and church suppers with her first, second and third cousins, and she enjoyed hearing about their mutual history.
Then, Bradley went to Wells College, before earning her Ph.D. in American culture from the University of Michigan. Next, she taught film history at Ohio University from 1985 until 2015, when she moved back to King Ferry and joined the Genoa Historical Association.
Needless to say, Bradley said, she thought she knew a lot about history.
