Sixteen counties in New York have been called the most severely affected in the state when it comes to the heroin and opioid crisis.
Unfortunately, Yates and Ontario counties are on that list.
In an effort to help more people struggling with addiction in those counties, state officials have announced the rollout of $25.2 million in federal funding for New York agencies on the front lines of dealing with the epidemic. That includes $1.4 million for the Clifton Springs-based Finger Lakes Area Counseling & Recovery Agency.
“Little Yates County is the second-most severely affected county in New York state, per capita,” said Marty Teller, FLACRA’s longtime executive director. “When you have five overdose deaths in one year in Yates County, it is just crushing. Every death from addiction is a horror, but when five people die in Rochester the community does not notice. When it happens in Yates County, people are talking about it on the streets and in the coffee shops.”
The grant was awarded through the Opioid State Targeted Response-Centers of Treatment Innovation Initiative. The $1.4 million will be dedicated to combating the crisis in high-need counties identified by the state Office of Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Services — Yates and Ontario.
