Newark woman killed in tragic tractor accident

A Newark woman was killed after becoming pinned beneath a tractor in an accident on Bloom Rd. in Newark.

The Newark Fire Department, along with the Newark Arcadia Volunteer Ambulance responded to 89 Bloom Rd. for a woman trapped beneath a farm tractor.

When crews arrived, 59-year-old Carol Boyd was found under the tractor, suffering from serious trauma. The investigation determined that Boyd had been sitting in a lawn chair while her husband was attempting to start the couple’s tractor by jumping the battery.

While in the process, and without notice, the tractor started and lurched in reverse — striking Boyd with the rear hitch of the tractor.

The victim was extricated by members of the Newark Volunteer Fire Department and transported to Newark Wayne Community Hospital.

Boyd succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

“This type of accident is extremely rare but none the less tragic and unforeseen,” said Newark Police Chief David Christler. He noted that no criminal action is pending.
