FL schools turning to social media more and more

It’s not just the chillier evenings and sales on school supplies that signal another school year is at hand. If you take a look at school district websites or follow your own district on social media, the signs have been there for weeks.

In this age of instant information, usually on a mobile phone, Finger Lakes area school districts are making greater use of social media as a communication tool.

“We think it’s a way to engage [parents] in a two-way conversation,” said Heather Swanson, public relations director for the Geneva city school district.

She noted that’s the biggest difference between social media and communicating via letters, newsletters and even robo-calls.

“Obviously they can call us back but they can’t engage in conversations in the way you can with social media,” she said.

In Geneva, Facebook is by far the most popular and established social media platform, but others are catching on.
