As the administrator of Ontario County’s STOP-DWI program, Sue Cirencione speaks to high school students about the dangers of impaired driving.
Sometimes, she wonders if they are taking her seriously. If not, she thinks some new tools at her disposal will get the message across.
Called “fatal vision” goggles, they were tried out Wednesday at the Ontario County Traffic Safety Board’s summer symposium. Several members of the board put on the goggles, which simulate impaired driving at different levels, and tried to navigate a golf cart through cones in a parking lot.
“Sure, I can go up in front of a class and say don’t drink and drive, and blah blah blah, and show a couple of videos. This is hands-on,” Cirencione said. “This actually gets them in a vehicle and gives them a sense of what it’s like to drive drunk or while on drugs. This is an activity they will remember.”
