Port Byron, Weedsport schools to have Chromebooks for every student in a certain grade

Two Cayuga County school districts will supply students in certain grades with new technology for this upcoming academic year.

Dana L. West Junior-Senior High School in Port Byron will provide each student in grades seven through 12 with Chromebooks while sixth-grade students in Weedsport Elementary School will also receive the devices.

A Chromebook is a laptop computer that uses Google's Chrome operating system.

West principal Mike Jorgensen said the idea of having technology for each student in a certain grade isn't new at Port Byron, as the elementary school has had iPads for four years.

He said it was determined Chromebooks would be better for older students instead of iPads. Students will be able to take the devices home after school and weekends, and will return them at the end of the year.
