On Saturday, New York State Sen. Pam Helming (R-54) will join local officials in Wayne County to visit homes and businesses, which have been dealing with a raised flood threat as Lake Ontario continues to rise.
Sen. Helming will be joined by Chairman of the Wayne County Board of Supervisors and Sodus Town Supervisor Steve LeRoy, and Village of Sodus Point Mayor Chris Tertinek.
They will start at the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Sodus Point. They will visit homes and businesses along the shoreline of Lake Ontario who have dealt with unprecedented flooding.
Sen. Helming says she has been in constant communication with officials at the local, state and federal level to provide assistance to the communities in need.
She will call on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to issue a State of Emergency for the affected areas, and will urge municipal leaders from these communities to do the same.
Towns and villages can become eligible for federal FEMA assistance if the governor does declare a State of Emergency through his own initiative — or at the request of the impacted municipality.
The water levels in Lake Ontario are continuing to rise at an unusually high pace and the impacts of continued flooding could be potentially catastrophic.
