The Ontario and Yates County Sheriff’s Offices have issued boating advisories for all of the lakes in those counties. This comes just a week after Seneca and Cayuga County officials declared advisories for Seneca and Cayuga Lakes.
The move also comes just days after a state of emergency was declared along Lake Ontario for a flood threat, which exists predominantly for the next few weeks as water levels continue to rise.
Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero said the following in a statement Friday morning:
“The Ontario County Office of Sheriff joins with the Yates County Office of Sheriff in urging boaters to observe caution due to floating debris while operating boats on Canandaigua Lake. Boaters are urged to operate their vessels at no more than 5 miles per hour within 200 feet of shore on Canandaigua Lake. Boaters are also urges to observe reduced speeds on Honeoye Lake as their may exist floating debris also below the surface of Honeoye Lake.”
Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike had the following to add earlier:
“With the heavy rains of yesterday and last evening many creeks and gulley’s that empty into the Seneca, Keuka and Canandaigua Lakes have washed assorted debris into the lakes and they can be a floating hazard to navigation. Boaters are cautioned to be observant of floating tree limbs, logs, stumps, and misc. debris in the water.
A reminder that it’s the NYS Navigation Law on Keuka and Canandaigua Lakes to be no more than 5 mph within 200 feet of shore and on Seneca 100 feet from shore. Any hidden obstructions likely to be inside those distances.”
