Auburn school board opts for tax increase to save jobs

The Auburn school board voted 5-4 on Tuesday to opt for a 3.98-percent tax increase for the 2017-18 budget, with the added decision to use that money to save nine jobs out of the potential full-time equivalents to be cut.

Each board member was asked to individually state whether they wanted to keep the tax levy at the proposed 1.98-percent increase or to raise it to 3.98 percent, the cap set by the state, in light of the $3.6 million deficit the district is facing.

President Mike McCole and board members Karol Soules, Jeffrey Gasper and Sam Giangreco voted for 1.98 percent against the five board members who voted to go up to the cap.
