New York teachers union elects new president

The state’s powerful teachers union is under new leadership.

Andrew Pallotta, who had served as executive vice president of New York State United Teachers since 2009, was elected president Saturday at the union’s annual Representative Assembly.

Pallotta succeeds former President Karen Magee, who served one three-year term as the union’s top official. Magee announced earlier this year that she won’t seek another term as president.

As executive vice president, Pallotta was responsible for overseeing NYSUT’s legislative and political action program. He is credited with expanding member engagement and increasing the union’s political activism. Under his leadership, the union set records for member donations to its political action committee, VOTE-COPE.
