In October 2016, Amanda Lamphere left her job. The single mother of two had been working at Dunkin' Donuts in Auburn when she discovered her 7-year-old daughter, Samantha, was sick with her second round of leukemia. And Amanda had no choice but to step back from work.
Samantha was first diagnosed with leukemia in October 2013, but — after seven months of chemotherapy — her cancer was in remission. For over two years, Samantha stayed cancer-free, Amanda said, and life returned to normal as both mother and daughter went back to work and school.
Then, three years and two days after her first diagnosis, Samantha relapsed and was admitted to Golisano Children's Hospital in Rochester for treatment. And that's when two of Samantha's teachers stepped in to help.
