Bloomfield High School Gymnasium hosted the Section V Class C2 semifinals on Monday night in a pair of games streamed live on FL1 Radio. In a pair of thrillers, both the #4 seed Lyons Lions and the #2 seed East Rochester Bombers, would fall to higher seeds and both would have the basketball in their possession as the clock wound down in the fourth quarter with a chance to extend their seasons.
Lyons shot out to a hot start against #8 Geneseo with 24 first quarter points behind hot early shooting from senior Ben Rockefeller and sophomores Kerel Kelly and Justice Smith building a 14 points lead before the Blue Devils came back to eventually take the lead in the fourth quarter. Up just one, with the Lions inbounding the ball under their own basket, Justice Smith rolled off a pick near the foul line and received the inbound pass with a clear look at the rim. He rose to shoot from 6 feet when Geneseo senior leader Kyle Rollins rose to send the ball into the stands. A last second three point attempt by Rockefeller rattled around the rim and out as time expired and Lyons would fall to the Blue Devils 59-58.
In the second game of the evening, the East Rochester Bombers and Coach Mark Michelle would lead for most of the first three quarters of their contest against the #3 seed Caledonia-Mumford Red Raiders before giving up the lead and falling behind by as much as seven points late in the game. Using full court pressure and transition scores, ER would pull back into striking range before an open three-pointer to tie at the buzzer by junior Mat Cicero would fall short giving the Livingston County League their second win of the evening against the two Wayne County foes.

If the 0-2 record on Monday night from Wayne County in Bloomfield wasn’t enough, the biggest shocker of the night was league champion Clyde-Savannah’s stunning end to their season at the hands of Cuba-Rushford in the C3 semifinals in Avon after holding a 15 point halftime lead.
All was not lost for Wayne County, however, as Enrique Mosman’s #7 seeded Gananda Blue Panthers came back from a 19 point halftime deficit, holding #2 Vertus to just 6 second half points, to win 52-48 and advance to the C1 title game in Rush-Henrietta on Friday night.
Just two W-FL girls team were in action on Monday night and it was the Romulus Lady Warriors advancing to the girls Class D2 finals with a 46-42 win over Arkport. Coach Damon Nicholson’s squad will face Elba who defeated Andover 46-39.
