Wind will gust, but minimal snow for FLX this weekend

Lake effect snow will only bring minimal accumulation to the Finger Lakes, but gusty winds will blow through the weekend.

A long duration lake effect snow event will organize today and persist through the weekend for areas immediately downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. However, for much of the Finger Lakes, snow accumulations will be very minor. Snow showers will be possible during most times through Friday, Saturday and into Sunday. These snow showers will be of the on and off variety, where it snows at a moderate rate for a few minutes, then the sun is back out.

This type of snow is unlikely to produce much in the way of accumulation. Significant accumulations of snow are expected in the snow belts outside of the Finger Lakes region. If your travels take you north of Syracuse on I-81 or south of Buffalo on I-90, the weather will be vastly different than in our region.

More noticeable than the snow will be the wind this weekend. While the strongest winds will blow on Friday, it will remain gusty on Saturday and Sunday as well.

Winds during the course of the day today will gust between 35 and 45 mph. The higher elevations and areas further west have the best chance at gusting to 45 mph, while lower elevations may top out closer to 35 mph.
