POWER RESTORED: Over 1,700 lose power in Ovid after several bright flashes seen near substation

Update: Power was restored to customers in Ovid around 2 am, according to those on the scene. The problem, which was originally reported to be at, or very-near the Spring Street substation, was actually found to be an issue in a nearby field.

Reports indicate that a transformer issue in Ovid resulted in over 1,700 customers being left without power Tuesday night.

373 of 374 customers in the Village of Ovid were without power as of 11:10 pm. 491 of 931 customers in the Town of Ovid were without power, and over 530 were without power in the Town of Romulus.

Where the outage started is unclear at this time, but FingerLakes1.com will update this story with more information in the coming hours.

Carrie Smalser, who was at home during the initial outage – said that power went on an off several times before finally going out completely. Smalser told FingerLakes1.com the following after the incident. According to Smalser, who is a member of the Ovid Fire Department the outage happened around 10:45 pm.

“There were four bright blue flashes came from the area of the substation on South Street. After the first [flash] power came back on for about 30 seconds. Then a second flash and power went [out] a second time. It came back on for a quick flash then went out again as a third flash lit up the sky. Another quick flicker as the fourth blue flash lit up while I was on the phone with Seneca Co dispatch.”
