Wildfire destroys Newark retirees’ dream home

Nearly a year and a half ago, Dick and Kathie Reeves moved into their dream retirement home on Shields Mountain in Tennessee. “Everything was just perfect,” Dick Reeves said of the chalet, which was built in 1996 but completely renovated in 2012. “The interior was 100 percent new. It had a 42-foot deck in the back and 18-foot cathedral ceilings. There was a brand new kitchen. It was perfect.”

Today, it’s a pile of rubble following the devastating wildfires that killed 14 people, injured 130 more and destroyed or damaged more than 2,000 businesses and homes in the communities of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, where the Reeves live.
