Romulus woman ID’d as victim in fatal crash Saturday on Route 89

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Saturday around noon, deputies investigated a two car fatal accident, which happened on State Route 89 in Covert.

Deputies say that Marie L. Perez, 41, of Romulus was northbound on Route 89 when she apparently lost control rounding a curve, and her 2001 Ford Focus skidded across the road- and into the path of a southbound pickup truck. The truck was operated by Jonathan C. Cupp, 44, of Romulus. The passengers side of the Focus was struck by the front of the pickup truck and Perez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies say that Perez’s children — who were rear seat passengers, ages 6-years-old and 5-months-old were in child restraints and survived the crash. The 6-year-old was transported to Upstate Medical Center where she is being reated for head and arm injuries. The younger victim was transported by South Seneca Ambulance to Upstate Medical Center to be checked over.

The driver of the pickup truck, Cupp, was transported by Bangs Ambulance to be checked over. While Cupp’s 13-year-old son was also transported to Upstate for treatment of lacerations and contusions. A third person in the pickup truck was also transported to Upstate for treatment of lacerations to the head.

Deputies say that Focus was demolished and the pickup truck sustained heavy damage. New York State Police assisted at the scene, as well as Trumansburg Fire Department. The roadway was closed for four hours.

The investigation is ongoing.
