Phelps man leads police on chase; arrested on multiple charges

A Phelps man was arrested after a chase ensued following a traffic stop.

Deputies in Ontario County say that Michael C. Heidemann, 33, of Phelps was stopped on Main Street in Phelps by the Phelps Police Department after he was observed driving while using a mobile device.

After being stopped and questioned by the officers Mr. Heidemann took off in his car, attempting to flee police. He was chased several miles and eventually drove off into a field on White Road in Phelps, where his vehicle became stuck.

He then ran through a field and into a wooded lot. The Phelps Police, Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and State Police K0 unit assisted in the search for the suspect.

He was later located by the K9 unit in a field off White Road. Heidemann was subsequently charged by the Phelps Police Department with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

His New York State Driver’s License had 15 suspensions, according to deputies. He was also charged with reckless driving, unlawful fleeing police in the second degree, resisting arrest, driving without headlights, stop sign and speed violations in addition to the other charges, which are still pending investigation.

An active warrant was also discovered from Geneva Town Court for petit larceny.

His next court appearance will be on December 14th.
