Progressive Waste Solutions honors Seneca Meadows

In honor of National Energy Awareness Month, Progressive Waste Solutions Ltd. (“the Company” or “Progressive Waste”) is celebrating its Seneca Meadows landfill-gas-to-energy (LFGTE) project in Seneca Falls. The facility helps to power homes and businesses by generating 17.6 megawatts of electricity from waste disposed at the landfill each year. The Seneca Meadows LFGTE project illustrates Progressive Waste’s long-term sustainability efforts to increase its contribution to the country’s renewable energy portfolio. Methane, a greenhouse gas 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide, is produced by the breakdown of organic material and waste within a landfill. Progressive Waste’s LFGTE facility collects the methane and uses it to fuel onsite engines or turbines, generating electricity to power surrounding homes and neighborhoods. By building LFGTE facilities, Progressive Waste has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by both capturing methane and offsetting the use of fossil fuel at utility power plants. The Seneca Meadows LFGTE project is a prime example of how communities across the state and country can decrease its dependence on conventional energy sources by building infrastructure around renewable resources. “By developing landfill gas to energy facilities, Progressive Waste and Seneca Energy, LLC are recovering resources and transforming them into a renewable energy for the community,” said Kyle Black, District Manager for Seneca Meadows. “Seneca Energy and Progressive Waste serve as a model of how waste-based energy can help broaden the nation’s ultimate goal of more clean renewable energy. The facility, built in 1995, is designed to process approximately 6,000 cubic feet per minute of incoming landfill gas. Progressive Waste is leading the initiative set out in the President’s National Energy Action Month Proclamation, which called for the country to “work to ensure a clean, safe, and sustainable energy future”. Proclamation – https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2013/09/30/presidential-proclamation-national-energy-action-month-2013Progressive Waste Solutions has a long record of environmentally responsible waste management. In addition to the Seneca Meadows LFGTE facility, Progressive Waste Solutions converts landfill gas into electricity at several of its landfills including its Complexes Enviro Progressive in Montreal Quebec, the Turkey Creek Landfill near Fort Worth, Texas, the Blue Ridge landfill in Pennsylvania and its Champ landfill in St. Louis, Missouri. Collectively these facilities generate enough energy to power more than 32,000 homes. The landfill gas-fueled power generating facilities produce 25 megawatts of electrical power, 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. It would require 200,000 barrels of oil to produce the same amount of power each year. Landfill gas is recognized as a renewable energy source by regulators across North America. Progressive Waste Solutions also operates one of the largest biogas facilities in North America. The facility located near Montreal, Quebec is converting landfill gas to natural gas which is then delivered to a pipeline network, via an injection point adjacent to the landfill site. The facility is designed to process approximately 10,000 cubic feet per minute of incoming landfill gas. The gas generated at the site is the equivalent of reducing the need for 350,000 barrels of oil per year or the fueling of 1,500 trucks for 20 years. The new plant will also result in the avoidance of greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide over a 10-year period.A second renewable gas project is located at Seneca Meadows. In a continuing partnership with Seneca Energy, this second project processes approximately 3,000 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas, enough to produce 25,000 gallons of compressed natural gas vehicle fuel per day.About Progressive Waste Solutions Ltd.As one of North America’s largest full-service waste management companies, we provide non-hazardous solid waste collection, recycling and disposal services to commercial, industrial, municipal and residential customers in 13 U.S. states and the District of Columbia and six Canadian provinces.
