Arrest in Union Springs arson/burglary investigation

Sheriff David Gould reports that the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a burglary and then subsequent arson of a residence located at 16 Park St. Union Springs. The residence, which was not being lived in at the time, suffered major damage as the result of an intentionally set fire which occurred on 07/30/12 at approximately 1:00 am. The investigation into the fire led to the discovery that the home had been burglarized for it’s copper pipe two days prior to the fire and detectives have arrested one person in connection with that theft so far.Workman MugshotCharged is:James “J.T.” Workman age 24 of 12 Seminary St. Union Springs.Burglary in the third degree (felony)Petit Larceny (misdemeanor)James Workman was arrested at his residence on 08/09/12 and arraigned in the Town of Fleming Court that afternoon and his being held in the Cayuga County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond. Workman is considered a “person of interest” in the arson investigation. Anyone with information about either of the above investigations is asked to contact Detective Brian Schenck at (315) 253-3545.The Sheriff’s Office is also investigating the burglary of an occupied residence on Creager Rd. in the Town of Springport which occurred overnight from August 5th to August 6th. Unknown person(s) entered the residence while the occupant slept and stole a long gun and other items from within. The long gun was recovered on the morning of the 6th a short distance from the residence in some tall weeds and other items from the home were found strewn along Creager Rd. It is believed at this time that the perpetrator(s) may have been on foot. Anyone with information about this incident or who witnessed suspicious persons in that area is asked to contact Detective Steven Smith at (315) 253-4869.
