Accident shuts down Hayes Road in Phelps – FingerLakes1.com Archive

A Waterloo man was involved in an accident in Phelps on Wednesday morning. Deputies in Ontario County say that Jimmy Burt, 65, of Waterloo was traveling north on Hayes Road in a 1993 Peterbuilt dump truck when the vehicle left the roadway – severing a utility pole in half. An investigation revealed that the truck’s right wheels left the roadway causing the truck to turn off the east shoulder and overturn. The utility pole was shared by NYSEG and Verizon. According to deputies, though, no customers lost power as result of the accident. Ontario’s Commercial Vehicle Inspection Unit assisted with the investigation, which ruled out a number of potential causes. Investigators say drugs, alcohol, speed, and mechanical failure were all ruled out. Burt was examined at the scene by Phelps Ambulance and denied being injured. He was not transported to any area hospitals. Oaks Corners Fire Department assisted at the scene, as did the Ontario County Hazmat Team. The NYS DEC Spill Response Unit did as well, all due to leaking hydraulic fluid from the dump truck.Hayes Road was not re-opened until 3:30 pm on Wednesday, as crews worked throughout the afternoon replacing the utility pole. No citations were issued in the accident.
