Gov. Andrew Cuomo will soon decide whether New York drivers will get the chance to report potholes with the click of a button.
Cuomo has until Sunday to approve or veto a bill that would require the state to create an interactive website where New Yorkers can report and track potholes along state-maintained roadways, including the Thruway system.
If he signs the bill, drivers would be able to request notifications for when the pothole is repaired.
The “pothole portal” would serve two purposes, according to Assemblyman Thomas Abinanti, D-Mount Pleasant, Westchester County, who sponsored the legislation.
The first would allow motorists to assist the state Department of Transportation in locating potholes along state-maintained roads, including the Thruway system.
From there, the department can better allocate resources to repairing the troubled roadways, according to Abinanti, who described state-maintained roads as “dangerous” and “dilapidated.”
“The state’s resources have been concentrated on the big, high-profile projects to the detriment of the roads and bridges that people travel on everyday,” he said, referring to the recent opening of the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge and the state’s upcoming plans to renovate LaGuardia Airport in Queens.
