The Finger Lakes Land Trust announced Wednesday it was receiving more than $3 million from the state for projects protecting water quality in the Finger Lakes, while Onondaga County received nearly $1 million for work including the Skaneateles Lake Watershed.
As part of a $3 million grant through the state’s Water Quality Improvement Project, the Land Trust was awarded $921,000 for projects on Cayuga Lake and $1.7 million for work within the Skaneateles Lake Watershed.
The Onondaga County Soil and Water Conservation District received $995,430 from the state’s Environmental Protection Fund for 51 conservation projects on 12 farms in the Skaneateles, Oneida, Onondaga/Otisco and Upper Tioughnioga River watersheds.
On Cayuga Lake, the Land Trust will use the grant funding to acquire land and conservation easements on the lake’s south end, along Fall Creek and other tributaries, according to a release. The project will protect a minimum of 260 acres and more than 21,000 feet of streambank, reducing nutrient runoff that’s frequently cited as a major cause behind harmful algal blooms.
