Weedsport unsure how to solve resident’s drainage issue involving state road

A Weedsport resident has been struggling with a drainage issue for 20 years, but the village isn’t sure who is allowed to fix it.

For the past few months, the drainage issue at a home at 2776 state Route 31 in the village has persisted on the agenda.

Mayor Jean Saroodis said Wednesday that the homeowner, Ann Streeter, says there used to be a drain near her property but that the state paved over it in 1998. Saroodis said “nobody knows” where the drain was.

While the location of the former alleged drain is unknown, the need for a solution is apparent.

“It is a mess,” Saroodis said. “Water is pooling up (to) where it’s actually dangerous.”

Water pools up in the home’s driveway, presenting ice and safety issues now that it’s winter. At the village’s November board meeting, Streeter’s daughter told the board that she is worried about her mother, or anybody, walking on that driveway in the winter as it’s a “sheet of ice.”
