Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday that Cayuga County was awarded approximately $400,000 in federal grant funding through a variety of programs for disaster preparedness and counterterrorism efforts.
“The safety of Cayuga County residents is our main concern,” said Patrick Mahunik, chair of the Cayuga County Legislature. “We are grateful for the federal funding that ensures more training and resources for our emergency management and law enforcement personnel.”
The largest portion of funding, $175,000, comes to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office through FEMA’s Operation Stonegarden. The program provides funding to enhance cooperation between federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies to support joint operations along the northern border.
Sheriff David Gould said the funds would certainly help the department’s members with special details regarding counterterrorism and working with other agencies and was grateful for the support.
“On behalf of all the great members of our Cayuga County Sheriff’s Department, we thank the Federal Government and the Governor for the federal funds that are designated for disaster preparedness and counterterrorism,” Gould said in a release.
From the State Homeland Security Program, the county is designated to receive $154,955 to “protect against, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism and other catastrophic disasters,” according to a release from the governor’s office.
