Cayuga County Health Department continues outreach for harmful algae season

While harmful algal bloom season may have just begun, with blooms detected across the Finger Lakes, the Cayuga County Health Department has been doing its best to educate the public on the issue since when there was ice, not algae, on the lakes.

As harmful algal blooms (HABs) have become a pernicious problem in recent years, the health department has continued efforts to make the public aware of the dangers, specifically those posed by microcystin toxins produced by some varieties of the cyanobacteria that form HABs.
