A longtime Auburn High School technology teacher recently received a new title: teachers union president.
Justin Herrling, who has been with the district for 15 years, was elected head of the Auburn Teachers Association in June. He served as treasurer for three years. Herrling, whose wife, Anne Herrling, is a William H. Seward Elementary School teacher and has two children within the district, said he ran for president because he felt he has "the energy and drive" for the spot and wants to advocate for the association, which includes around 370 members.
"Some people don't feel that they have a voice and I'm hoping that if they come to me I can be that voice," he said.
One of Herrling's primary goals as president is to establish a contract between the association and the district, as the last three-year agreement expired at the end of the school year. The association is looking to sit down with the district near the end of July.
