The local woman convicted of setting her house on fire 17 months ago will spend time in prison.
On Monday in Seneca County Court, Judge Rick Healy sentenced Diana Fegley to 1-to-3 years in prison for third-degree arson. She was convicted of the charge in April following a trial in county court.
Fegley, a retired supervisor with the county Division of Human Services, testified during the trial. She admitted arguing with her estranged husband, Andrew, who was living on East Kendig Street, on the day of the Feb. 22, 2017, fire and the day before, and contacting Waterloo police both days about getting her husband’s many guns out of their Inslee Street house.
Police testified that they asked Andrew Fegley to remove some of the guns. He did, with police present, while Diana was gone. She returned while they were there, and police said she was visibly upset at her husband.
The fire broke out about 45 minutes after the police and Andrew Fegley left. Diana Fegley testified that she was suffering from a migraine headache and laid down in a chair, with her dog, and pulled blankets over her head.
She said some time later, she heard a banging noise and was dragged out of the house.
During the trial, Waterloo Police Department Sgt. Lee Marquart testified that he, Waterloo firefighter Andrew Dailey and Michael Felice, Fegley’s Inslee Street neighbor, broke down the locked front door to rescue Fegley.
