Vince Scalise once joked that by the time the Cayuga-Seneca Canal Trail was completed, he’d be too old to walk it.
But Scalise, a Geneva man who spearheaded the effort to build the trail, said as soon as a recent back surgery heals, he’ll hike the seven-mile trail that now connects Geneva and Waterloo.
He and others have been working on the trail for the past 15 years, overcoming numerous delays and obstacles to get the funding, volunteers and government help to make the trail a reality.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 30, in Seneca Lake State Park to commemorate the end of construction of the trail’s initial phase.
Future plans call for the trail to continue along the canal from Waterloo to Seneca Falls and then go on to Montezuma.
The trail now goes from the canal locks in Waterloo to the city of Geneva Lakefront Park. It follows a route along the south side of the canal on the old railroad bed right of way, property owned by New York State Electric & Gas Corporation. The utility granted an easement to allow the trail to be built on its land.
