Circular EnerG lawyer praises Assembly for no vote on incinerator bill

ROMULUS — There’s at least one party happy the state Assembly did not vote on a bill that would have removed waste-to-energy incinerators from the state’s Article 10 review process.

That is the sponsor of the $365 million incinerator in the town of Romulus: Circular EnerG LLC of Rochester.

The bipartisan bill passed in the state Senate June 18 but never got to the floor of the Assembly for a vote before the Legislature adjourned for the summer around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Company lawyer Alan Knauf said the Assembly “acted responsibly in declining to pander to “not in my back yard” attitudes and junk science by declining to consider a law to pull the Circular EnerG project off the state’s Article 10 process. Knauf also refuted points made in the “justification” clause of the bill.

“This technology is the best option for trash and results in huge environmental benefits compared to landfills, including lower emissions of greenhouse gases, no odor and no emission of harmful levels of toxic air pollutants,” Knauf said.

“The facility would convert a largely vacant former Army base to a green energy center to run adjacent businesses, like greenhouses, and would not emit any industrial wastewater,” he said.
