Correia named Wayne County public defender

Wayne County has a new public defender.

Andy Correia, who has been serving as interim public defender since the retirement of James Kernan in March, lost the interim title Tuesday with a unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors.

A recruitment effort took place in April and May, and those who were part of the selection committee recommended that Correia be appointed.

The office provides legal services to people charged with a crime who cannot afford a lawyer.

County Administrator Rick House said supervisors made a wise decision, saying he has “the utmost respect for Andy. I have known Andy for several years. He is an exceptional attorney and manager as well.”

Correia was unable to attend the meeting, as he was at a regional law school teaching legal skills to young public defenders.
