Perez Williams wins major union’s support in race for Congress

A top labor union is taking sides in the 24th Congressional District Democratic primary.

Democratic congressional candidate Juanita Perez Williams announced Monday that she has been endorsed by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. The union represents more than 60,000 members in retail, service and other industries.

Perez Williams’ campaign noted that the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union is the first labor organization to endorse in the 24th district race.

“Juanita is a proven champion for working men and women in central New York,” said Stuart Appelbaum, president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. “She stood with New York workers in the Fight for 15 to raise the minimum wage. She fought Governor Pataki’s illegal layoffs as a member of the NY Public Employees Federation. She carried forward Governor Cuomo’s women’s equality agenda as regional director for the New York State Department of Labor.

He added, “Juanita is the fighter we need, and has stood with labor time and time again — RWDSU is proud to stand with her now.”
