Mets lose lead, fall below .500 for first time this season

At this point, the Mets are fortunate that Brandon Nimmo ranks among the Majors’ top hitters in many offensive categories, considering how fully the rest of their outfield is in disarray. Yoenis Cespedes’ absence has lasted for the better part of a month. Juan Lagares is done for the season. Michael Conforto only recently began hitting with much authority, and Jay Bruce, who departed Friday’s game due to injury, has been mired in a season-long slump.

With only Nimmo providing consistent value, the Mets dropped a 7-4 game to the Cubs at Citi Field on Friday to fall under .500 for the first time this season. Nimmo did his part, homering in the third inning to give New York a lead. But few others did, leaving the Mets exposed to key Cubs rallies in the seventh and eighth innings.
