Another day, more opposition.
According to U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, the opposition to the proposed incinerator in Romulus is clear. “The community opposition to this project is resounding; it is clear to me that Seneca County is not, and will never be a good location for this incinerator,” Schumer said in a visit to Seneca County on Friday. “Simply put, this incinerator is wrong for the Finger Lakes — and I will fight tooth and nail to ensure that this trash incinerator is snuffed out in its tracks.”

Seneca Lake Guardian President Joseph Campbell echoed the sentiments shared by elected officials on Friday. ““We commend Senator Schumer for taking a stand against the trash incinerator project and appreciate his visit to the Finger Lakes to witness first-hand the region’s vibrant wine and tourism industries, all of which is in jeopardy if this proposal moves forward. We are grateful to him for joining Governor Cuomo and our local elected officials in a bi-partisan effort to make sure companies like Circular enerG can’t exploit our community. The Finger Lakes is no home for trash or any other dirty industry that threatens our health and economy.”
The proposal would allow the daily transportation of nearly 3,000 tons of trash presumably from New York City by truck and/or rail for burning at an incinerator facility built at the Seneca Army Depot in Romulus. The project would be sited in the heart of Finger Lakes Wine Country just 3.9 miles from Seneca and Cayuga lakes, 3,200 feet from a K-12 school, and close to a residential facility for at risk youth.
The company behind the project is Rochester-based Circular enerG.
New York State Senator Pam Helming added the following:

Together, we made our voices heard in Albany, and now that message has reached Washington. Senator Schumer’s support is terrific for our entire region, and it shows that my colleagues and I are committed to opposing this project and working toward a solution in a bi-partisan manner. The Finger Lakes are natural treasures, and I am committed to continuing to work with my colleagues in the Legislature as well as the Governor and our federal representatives to protect and enhance our environment and our communities.
