Coinciding with the arrival of spring, Seneca Meadows District Manager Kyle Black has announced the landfill’s upcoming construction projects.
Black attended the Seneca County Board of Supervisors meeting May 8 and handed out copies of the landfill’s “Neighbor Notes” to board members. The mailer lists the following projects in the works:
Constructing 12 acres of landfill liner in a new cell.
The liner is a network of plastic and low permeability soil layer and collection pipes that protect the groundwater underneath the landfill. The landfill installed 13 acres of liner last year.
Applying topsoil and seed on the 53 acres of final cover material that was installed in 2017.
The final cover is a layer made up of geomembrane, clay soil, topsoil and grass that encases the landfill to prevent rainwater from entering the deposit area.
Installing 10,000 feet of methane-collecting pipes.
These are pipes placed directly in the waste to extract methane and transport it to an energy production across Route 414.
Installing 50 vertical landfill gas wells.
They are installed in the waste and connected to the collector pipes to extract methane.
Installing an additional 2 million gallon, double- lined leachate storage tank.
Leachate is the liquid that has contacted garbage and collects at the bottom of the deposit area. The tank is for the temporary storage of the leachate.
