A Cayuga County judge has closed his courtroom following The Auburn Citizen’s coverage of the first day of an inmate’s civil confinement trial.
On Wednesday, an Auburn Correctional Facility inmate appeared in court for a jury trial after the state Attorney General’s office filed a petition to extend his confinement or supervision. The inmate, who is referred to in court papers as Donald G. but was referenced by his full name during the trial, has been incarcerated for multiple sex offenses and is due to be released from prison.
With support from the Attorney General’s office, Auburn defense attorney Adam Van Buskirk submitted a motion earlier this year to close the court for the proceedings. At the time, he argued that would protect the identities of both his client and the victims in the case.
