Straight from winter to summer?
Apparently.
The Finger Lakes experienced the warmest day of the year on Wednesday — as temperatures climbed well into the 80s for the first time. And after last week’s cold weather — it felt like a shift from winter, to summer.
Now, on the second day of unseasonably warm conditions — a risk for strong to severe thunderstorms exists for the region.
FLX Weather Meteorologist Drew Montreuil says that the storms will be scattered, but a threat during the afternoon. “The primary threat with these cells will be damaging winds. Some small hail will also be possible,” he explained. “The threat for severe thunderstorms should diminish after 9 or 10 pm, though a few additional non-severe storms will be possible beyond that and again early Friday morning.”
Positioning of a cold front on Friday, though, will mean that the risk for severe weather will pick up in the afternoon. “As a cold front approaches in the evening, thunderstorms will again become possible in the late afternoon and evening hours. With a stronger forcing mechanism in the cold front, thunderstorms may be more widespread as they organize into a broken line,” he added. “Given the current expected timing and position of that front, areas further west and north may have a higher severe risk.”
On Friday, damaging winds are expected to be the primary risk factor within these storms.
